Open Play

Open Play is a welcoming event where you come on your own and rotate into games as they finish. It’s different from a private court rental—players mix in with others, and you don’t need (or have to bring) a set partner. Just show up, join the fun, and enjoy playing with a variety of people!

San Diego Pals Pickleball League (SDPPL) Rules and Considerations

  • Welcome to the pickleball league! We make it simple and flexible for everyone. Two teams can meet up and play at your agreed locations and time and play three (3) games total. All games are to be played to 11 points and win by 2. The maximum a team can win is three (3) “W” per meeting. Our spreadsheets will total up the number of “W” only and that will be used to determine playoffs selection. Each team can play against the same opponent two times. We recommend each team to play with every team on the roster twice to maximize the chance of earning a Win.

  • Here are some examples of situation we might run into:
Team 1 is up 6-3 on game 1 then team 1 forfeit for whatever reason. Team 2 will win that game with the recording score 6-3 “as is” (with Team 2 win by default) and vice versa.
Our spreadsheet is keeping track of the number of points in each game just in case there is a tie in the number of “W”. If there is a tie in “W”, we use the higher points in total games to advance to playoffs.
In a playoffs situation: A team has the option to take a forfeit from the opponent team when that team:

      * Doesn’t show up for the match. (Communication failures may not be subject to default.)

      * Shows up more than 30 minutes late.

      * Doesn’t give 4 hours notice for match cancellations.

***If this situation occurs, the other team will receive a Win and advance to the next round. Repeated offenses may be subject to removal from the League, and no refund will be given.

  • Players may mutually agree to reschedule the match – either replaying or finishing it at a later date, but should discuss this and agree beforehand.

  • Both teams are responsible for making contact to choose the place, time and day of the week to play. 1) Please make sure your match is confirmed. Communication failures may not be subject to default. 2) Players hosting at their Club’s courts may request beforehand that the League partners pay the guest fee. If you don’t agree, please find another match.

  • Only the winner posts the match scores, within 24 hours after each match. Please email your score to and cc your opponent to: 2025sdppl@gmail.com

  • As a guideline, players should be allowed to have two (2) one-minute timeouts per game and 3-5 minutes rest between games.

  • Line calls. Only call balls on your side of the court, but give the benefit of the doubt if not absolutely sure. Another option that can be agreed on in advance is “Play two (balls)”, i.e. replay the point if disputed calls can’t be resolved.

  • Coaching and guests: Coaching in league matches is not allowed. Any player guests must remain quietly outside the court area. Please use common sense and keep spectators from disrupting play with unnecessary noise or cheering.

  • Playoff Tournament is held at the end of each season, beginning week #9. 1) The “Top 8” teams with the most “W” will advance to the playoff. The playoffs format will be 2 out of 3 wins to advance. In the case of teams that have the same “W”, we will use the most points to decide the win.

  • Division Winner Award: FIRST place (cash) SECOND place (cash)

  • Poor Sportsmanship: 1) If the League Director receives more than 3 complaints in a given season about the same member from other players, that member will be subject to removal from the league, and no refund will be given. Those complaints may range from chronic bad line calls to any other poor sportsman-like behavior. 2) Egregious displays of poor sportsmanship, independently verified by 2 or more sources, may subject that member to immediate suspension or removal from the league. They may include, but are not limited to: ongoing foul or vulgar language, abusive behavior toward the opponent or equipment (paddle throwing, hitting ball out of the court), any threatening or assault oriented action.

**No refunds will be given should a member be suspended or removed under the above circumstances.

  • If you sign up to play and for some reason don’t play please don’t request a refund or to be moved to another season as the time and expense involved in the set up and removal of your registration exceeds the league fee paid. A player who withdraws from the league due to injury or time constraints is required to make the administrator aware of the withdrawal. This player will be removed from the website as active, but all wins will remain posted.

  • The league’s primary purpose is to build community involvement in pickleball and to help people improve their games. Players should be at least 18 years of age. (Any exceptions to this policy are based on parental approval, and at the discretion of the League Director.)

  • Play at your own risk and SDPPL is not responsible for any injuries.
